How appropriate that school starts back up again during the month of Elul. While our children and grandchildren return to their studies, we start to become more reflective, preparing for the High Holy Days. Just as the school bell announces that the time for learning has begun, the sound of the shofar announces the time for repentance, for teshuvah.
At this time, we start to think back over the past year, considering our relationships with others and with God. We review our words and actions from the past year, things we might have done differently, and how we might improve in the year to come. We expect our children to learn and grow from year to year, and our Jewish tradition also expects us to continue learning and continue improving our souls.
May you and your family have a happy and healthy New Year!
